There were strong past bonds between Baur and BMW, even before Jochen Neerpasch knocked on Baur’s door to ask for their participation in the production of the M1. Baur had build convertible versions of BMWs as early as 1954. Today Baur is the body and assembly department of IVM Automotive. The final stage in the production of the M1 started -ironically- by undoing some of the work done in the previous stage. The front and rear lids, the seats, the middle console and the rear luggage compartment were all removed to gain better access to the M1’s innards. After this initial step the M1 was fitted with a cooling system, heating and a/c, gas and oil tanks, brakes, shift linkage and all the other parts that turned empty shells into living, breathing super machines. Among the ‘other parts’ was the most important direct contribution of BMW; the 277 hp, straight 6, M88 engine. |
This one is mine; M88-489. |
