one of the founders of Ital Design. Normally involved with ‘just’ the design of automobiles –and sometimes building prototypes–, the M1 marks the only time actual production was undertaken in-house.

The list of notable automobiles designed by Giugiaro is very long. There are the Alfa Romeo Giulia GT, DeTomaso Mangusta, Maserati Ghibli, Lotus Esprit, VW Golf, Fiat Panda, DeLorean DMC-12 and –more recently- the Alfa Romeo Brera, just to name a few other than the M1.

The skeletons from Marchesi and skins from T.I.R. came together at Ital Design using mostly rivets and glue. During a three day process each M1 would receive the first layers of paint. Each layer was carefully polished and dried in an oven. After these cosmetics, the M1 received windscreens, cables, the interior and an instrument panel. The next stop for the street versions of the M1 was in Germany, at the facilities of a company called Baur. The racecars would go elsewhere.
